On Tuesday, December 27, legendary actress Carrie Fisher, 60, was found dead, drowned in moonlight and strangled by her own bra.
I’ll make this as short as I can…
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, there weren’t a whole lot of strong female characters in popular television or movies. Women were prevalent, but a true “strong” woman character who could sit at the same table with their male counterparts seemed in short supply.
The main outlier to this, for me, was Leia Organa. The first time we see her, she’s in the face of one of the most powerful Sith Lords to have walked the Star Wars galaxy. We don’t know this at the time, of course, but as the movies progress and the scope of his atrocities become apparent, you start to really “get” just how much courage it took for her to look into that mask and essentially tell him to “fuck off”.
For me, the loss of that character hits harder than the death of the actor, though the more I read up on her, the more I realize that I missed an opportunity to learn from someone great while I still had a chance to meet her. I have a lot of reading to do now that I’ve been exposed Carrie Fisher’s actual wit and intelligence. I’m looking forward to it, though it’ll be tinged with sadness.
Anyway… to wherever death by bra takes you, I wish you fair travels Ms. Fisher.
May the Force be with you.
Let’s try something new, shall we?
A couple years ago, I wrote a short story named “Soundless” and submitted it to the Writers of the Future contest. The first time, I received an Honorable Mention, so I edited it a little and threw it back into the ring, only to come out with another Honorable Mention.
Since then, I’ve set this story on the back burner and moved on to other stories and work, but I keep coming back to it.
So, in the spirit of the holidays, I’m going to release it as a serial. It’ll come twice weekly, but only be a few pages long. If all goes well, you’ll all become ravenous with the need to finish the story. 😉
Once upon a time, journalism was viewed by many as an obnoxious, yet absolutely necessary facet of democracy. Weeks, months, or even years were dumped into stories that brought to light the worst aspects of humanity or the depraved depths to which governments would sink in order to maintain a crooked grip upon power.
As the decades came and went, this cornerstone of democracy began to evolve. It grew and morphed, picking up the tumors of reality television and using them to grasp hold of the seemingly intangible nature of a society’s whims that rapidly adapted to a culture based on information saturation. You could no longer grip a person or a movement with a single, fierce goal. Now the target was a different set of metrics: click-through-rate, bounce rate, kitten-to-bunny-ratios, etc.

Joy of joys… a new website. The other one has been down for so long that I’m not even entirely sure where to start.
Let’s start with the simple questions first for all two of you who watched the last site die a lonely death:
- Where are the blogs and vidjamagame reviews?! They’re dead, Jim. I let the old blog lapse into disrepair and when I came back to pick it back up, an SQL inject vulnerability allowed an epic fuckton of spam to be deposited in those old blogs and such. As much as I enjoyed some of those old posts, I’m just going to let them die a graceful death. Farewell, my Batman: Arkham Asylum review! :'(
- Why did you change the domain name? Well, I’m an author and this is my name. I figured it was about time I actually used the damn thing. That and my wife may need the wyantswalk domains for something else in the future, so I figured it was time to disassociate.
- Are you actually going to keep this up to date this time, you damned heathen? Hopefully. I’m going to set aside time to get on here and blog. We’ll start there and see how it goes.
- Speaking of that… are you actually writing anything or are you just going to continue to disappoint us? Shit. Tough crowd. I have been writing, so there. I have two short stories that need some editing and then are going into some writing contests. Additionally, I’ve been working on book two of The Sundering and have that about 1/4 to 1/3 done. In hindsight, that’s not a ton of writing though… thus this blog coming back up.
I think that can cover enough to get started. I’ll try not to disappoint this time.
